| Through the mis-en-scene we can see that young people are being portrayed stereo-typically as; anti-social and bad behaving, or always causing khaos in some manner. We can observe this firstly with the costume used; the character is using the archetypal prison attire, implying that all young people have either been to prison or are going to because they behave badly. Secondly the idea that the main focus (being the character) has been shot behind an office window, this connotes how in society, young people are behind or in a sense, under authority. But the fact that he is dancing behind the window corresponds to the stereotype that young people do not behave in the supposedly correct way and always break rules. The fact that the location has even been set in an office, which a young person dressed in prison attire draws a huge contrast to highlight this representation of people of a young/adolescent age; that they have anti-social behavior. The body language of the character increases the credibility of the message being transmitted in this image; as he has his arms and mouth open suggesting he is dancing and singing, and from the known norm (that offices are a place of formality and sophistication) seeing a young person in that stance, the audience can immediately understand they are doing something they shouldn't be doing. All of these aspects show that through the medias eyes, young age particularly is represented as in period of misbehaving (being the young character in the prison suit), and eventually when you become older, you phase into a mature well behaved adult (then being the adult working in the office, becoming the authority), so we can see adulthood in this still is marginalized. |
Some good observations about how this representation has been constructed. You've also made good use of media analytical terminology such as 'connotes'. Beware of over-using the semicolon (;). My advice, don't bother with it at all. Use a comma to separate items in a list.
